Probably Turkey’s best musical export, BaBa ZuLa has gained a huge global fanbase with their stunning delivery of Istanbul psychedelia.
Performing since their student days at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul in the late 1980s, BaBa ZuLa’s authentic blend of Turkish folk, complete with electric saz and spoons, is fed through the musical filters of dub, electro and rock to create an aural experience like no other.
Three of the original band members, Murat Ertel, Levent Akman, and Emre Onel, remain. They are joined by guest musicians for their tours, their live sets full of improvisation to stimulate all the senses.
For this trip to the British capital, they are being supported by the brilliant singer-songwriter Djanan Turan, herself a core part of London’s underground Turkish psychedelic folk scene. In recent years, Djanan’s music has traversed disco, reggae, and trancey Anatolian rhythms.
Expect tantalisingly surreal performances from both these politically conscious artists when they take to the stage at London’s leading live music venue the Jazz Café on 10 August.
