Turkiye have reached the last eight of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022, but have to overcome a tough American side today in order to progress to the semis.
The Sultans of the Net, who topped their first round group, qualified for the quarter-finals despite losing two of their four games in Round 2, including a defeat to the USA.
The Turks started Round 2 with two good wins, beating both Germany and Canada 3-0. They then lost a closely contested match 3-1 to the USA, followed by a 3-0 defeat to reigning champions Serbia.
Before today’s big game, Turkiye and Galatasaray volleyball player Ayçin Akyol said: “We are aware of our opponent, we know them well. We have watched the mistakes from our previous game [with the USA] and worked on them. We will do our final preparations tomorrow [Tuesday] morning.”
“We are ready for the game. I am hoping everything will be really good. We are going to battle, we are going to fight. We want everyone to get behind us,” Akyol added.
The USA v Turkiye match takes place at the Gliwice Arena in Poland, at 4.30pm (UK time) on Tuesday, 11 October.
The other three quarterfinal matches are also taking place today. Italy play China in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, at 4pm UK time.
