This Friday evening, the Cyprus Islamic Association of Britain will be hosting its annual prayer night to usher in the three sacred months of Islam (‘Üç Aylar’), which concludes at the end of the month of fasting known in Turkish as Ramazan.
The prayer night takes place the day after Regaip Kandili Gecesi, which this year occurs on 22nd March. The evening event will bring the community together to commemorate the time when God passed on his wisdom to the prophet Muhammed. It will be a time of reflection for worshippers, as they give thanks for their blessings and consider their spiritual responsibilities during these holy months.
Husayn Hashim El Bakayi – the head of the Cyprus Islamic Association – extends an open invitation to all British Turks, both practicing Muslims and those curious about the faith. All are welcome to this Thursday’s prayer evening, where men and women sit together to listen to sermons in both English and Turkish.
There will also be guidance about Üç Aylar and fasting during Ramazan, which this year starts on 16 May and ends on the evening of 14 June 2018. During the evening, traditional Cypriot sweet dishes including lokma (dough balls) and dates will also be shared among the guests.
The event is again being hosted by the Turkish Cypriot Community Association in Harringay, North London. The prayer night is free to attend and no prior registration is needed.
