Turkish folk-rock star Selda Bağcan to play Camden’s Koko this autumn

One of Turkiye’s most acclaimed artists, singer-songwriter Selda Bağcan will be back in London in November for a single show at Koko in Camden.

Born in Muğla, southern Turkiye, in January 1948, the renowned musician and activist is known for blending traditional Turkish folk music with psychedelic rock, giving her songs a potency all of their own.

Rising to fame during the politically turbulent 1970s, her passionate lyrics often convey strong social justice themes, such as Adaletin Bu Mu Dünya [Is this Your Justice, World?], Yaz Gazeteci Yaz [Write Journalist Write], and Yürüyorum Dikenlerin Üstünde [I Walk On Thorns] that have become anthemic in later years.

To date, Bağcan has released over 20 albums, with extracts from some of her most memorable hits, “İnce İnce Bir Kar Yağar” [A Thin (Sheet) of Snow Falls] and “Mehmet Emmi” among, sampled by international artists such as Mos Def, Dr Dre and Percee P, elevating her influence beyond Turkey’s borders.

At 74 years of age, Bağcan’s live performances are something of a celebration as this guitar-playing veteran artist-cum-activist creates a unique life-affirming fusion of music and message that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
