Next month, veteran actor and writer Osman Balıkçıoğlu will debut his new comedy in North London. Two performances of Atma Recep da Din Gardaşıyık will be staged at St. Monica’s Hall in Palmers Green on Sunday 15 May.
The play follows the life of a family from Lefkoşa’s Samanbahça district that moves to London with tragic-comic consequences. One of the actors, Artun Gökşan, told his Facebook friends the show is so funny, “you will wet yourselves from laughing.”
Gökşan stars alongside Balıkçıoğlu, Ayhan Niyazi Korel, Fatma Çağın, Fatma Kemal, and Hüsnü Kişi in the two-act production. Rehearsals have been underway since February and many tickets already sold.
Several of the cast were also involved in Balıkçıoğlu Cabaret Theatre’s 2015 hit shows, featuring hilarious sketches about Cypriots. The success of these shows – three sell-out events in London and four in North Cyprus – propelled Balıkçıoğlu to pen a new comedy.
The 71-year-old Turkish Cypriot actor has been an ever-present on stage, TV and radio for over fifty years, teasing out the comedy elements of his community to bring laughter to generations.
Part of the proceeds from the May performances will be donated to the TRNC’s Association for the Blind.
