The popularity of cycling continues to grow across London, with over 1.2 million rides made every single day, according to Transport for London. However, for some, taking to the capital’s roads can be a daunting prospect.
On the last Sunday of April, Cycling Champion Gönül Ekmekçi Tekin and friends are organising a ‘London Loves Cycling Community Ride’, which will take cyclists on a 4-5 mile journey through parks and quieter roads in North London, and a similar distance on the way back.
This fun, free community ride will be starting outside Silver Street station (west side) in Edmonton and then travel northwards to the new Oakwood Park Café – Enfield’s first bike café. The ride will be led and marshalled by London Cycling Campaign trained marshals, including Gönül.
People can leave the ride at any point. Children with a responsible adult are also very welcome to be a part of the ride.
About Gönül Ekmekçi Tekin
Last year, Gönül was named in the UK’s prestigious ‘100 Women in Cycling 2023’ list for her “outstanding dedication to inspiring and empowering hundreds of women in North London, particularly those from ethnic minorities” to take up cycling. She was also one of the key organisers of London’s first-ever Women’s Freedom Ride in March.
Gönül is keen to see more people from the British Turkish community take up this healthy mode of transportation.
So, if you’re in North London and interested, just turn up at Silver Street Station – no prior registration is needed. And if you don’t have a bike, you can borrow bikes for free from the nearby Pymmes Park Bike Library.
