What’s the best way to dispel the doom and gloom in the news? Take a selection of leading artists from the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East. Throw in a feel-good film about peace, and an award-winning storyteller. That is the essence of Amal – a celebratory evening to stimulate all the senses.
Singer-songwriter Olcay Bayır tops the bill. Her stunning vocals and music epitomise the sounds and stories of her native region, sweeping down from the Caucasus Mountains through the Black Sea and Bosporus Strait to the Mediterranean Basin.
Other artists involved in this fantastic evening include musical trio Mponendis playing the traditional raw sounds of the Greek islands and the mesmerising Alia Alzougbi with her tales from around the world. During the evening, there’s a short film with a live soundtrack and words from Peace Ambassador Prem Rawat, as well as a set by master oud player and composer Attab Haddad. And if that’s not enough, Sebastian Merrick (Kazum!) is on the decks.
The event is organised by Arts Canteen.
