Iconic singer-songwriter Selda Bağcan is enjoying a huge resurgence in her career. The queen of 70s Turkish Psychedelic Rock has been sampled by the likes of Mos Def and Dr Dre, and is now a regular on the international live music circuit, exposing a new generation to her blend of Anatolian Folk Punk-Rock Protest music.
A life-long activist, Selda’s world is marked by struggle. She was imprisoned repeatedly during the 60s, 70s and 80s, but never ceased to fight, using her art to highlight injustice and champion the rights of the poor in tracks such as İnce İnce Bir Kar Yağar (It’s raining fine fine snow) and Yaz Gazeteci Yaz (Write journalist write’).
Often using the lyrics of well-known Türkü (Turkish Blues) songs, the multi-instrumentalist has added layers of sounds, experimenting with Rock and Roll, Psychedelic Rock and Electronica to produce some of Turkey’s most memorable Folk songs. Her psychedelic guitar riffs can be regularly heard on the music of major hip hop artists, including Percee P’s Reverse Part 2 (2007), K.A.R. feat. Fat Joe’s Oh Baby (2009), Mos Def’s Supermagic (2009) and Dr Dre’s Issues (2015).
During her forty-year career, Selda has rocked the likes of Glastonbury, Womad (Reading, UK), Primavera Sound (Barcelona, Spain) Earl’s Court (London), and many other prestigious festivals and concert venues worldwide.
Next month, the 69-year-old will be performing live at KOKO supported by surf band Boom Pam. Book your tickets now to see this incredible musician live.
