One of the UK’s biggest food wholesalers has introduced a new range of Turkish bakery products.
Both trade and consumer customers can now purchase a tasty selection of Boreks, Baklava and Simits from JJ Foodservice.
Part of its own-label Letsdough bakery range, the new products are authentically Turkish, produced by JJ’s suppliers in Turkey.
The wholesaler believes simit can “shake up traditional sandwich menus”. The circular bread covered in sesame seeds and with a large hole in the middle offers a fresh take on sandwiches at home and in foodservice.
Dating back to the sixteenth century, Istanbul’s traditional street food can be enjoyed as a snack on its own, or with a variety of fillings, ranging from sweet to savoury.
The Simits are available at an exclusive price of just 99p per pack of four.
JJ is backing the launch with a #SimitSmiles campaign, asking people how they enjoy theirs.
“We want consumers to send us their favourite fillings to help celebrate Simit,” said Chief Product Officer for JJ, Sezer Ozkul.

In addition to the Simits, a new range of ‘Boreks’ – Turkish-style savoury pastries – have been launched in cheese, potato and spinach & cheese varieties.
JJ has also added Baklava – a sweet dessert made with chopped nuts and filo pastry, traditionally served with ice cream – to the own-label range.
All products are frozen and can be oven-baked and enjoyed warm or at room temperature.
“The new range is perfect for picnics and sharing occasions at home. In foodservice, they will also add interest to café and sandwich shop menus,” said Sezer.
