Dr. Fazıl Küçük Turkish Supplementary School is hosting a special Turkish Cultural Event in conjunction with the Yunus Emre Institute London this Saturday, 2 March.
Akin to a mini indoor festival, the three hour event will encompass traditional folk music and dancing, storytelling based on the adventures of Nasreddin Hoca, and a special performance of the Karagöz and Hacivat puppet show.
Students will be performing Turkish Cypriot and Anatolian folk dances, and there will be a live saz performance, along with music from DJ Oz.
There will be crafts and food stalls, where people can buy Turkish and Turkish Cypriot handmade goods and cuisine, including beautiful handwoven silk [‘koza’] pieces, and foods such as ‘Gullirikya’ (sweet pastry made of pekmez), ‘Gollifa’ (a healthy mix of wheatgrass, pomegranate, raisins and sesame seeds) and ‘Gözleme’ (savoury filled Turkish flatbread).
Formerly known as Crofton Turkish School, Dr. Fazıl Küçük Turkish Supplementary School was established in 1984 by a group of parents living across Lewisham Borough who wanted their children and others of Turkish and Turkish Cypriot heritage to learn their native language and culture. Since then, the voluntary-run weekly supplementary school has been offering Turkish language and cultural classes, and exams for young people in Southeast London.
The school, named after a prominent Turkish Cypriot leader, has since moved from its original home in Brockley to Harris Girls Academy on Lennard Road in Beckenham. It is also celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
This Saturday’s evening of entertainment is perfect for all the family and best of all, it’s also free to attend. Everybody is most welcome!
