The eclectic Djanan Turan and The Flying Karpet Collective return to the Jazz Café to bring us a new addition to their Psychedelic World project, this time celebrating the incredible music of one of the Godfathers of Anatolian Rock, Erkin Koray.
The free-spirited, guitar-playing singer-songwriter is one Turkiye’s most significant artists of the past 60 years. He is rightly hailed as one of the big pioneers of Anatolian and psychedelic rock, penning some of Turkiye’s most memorable hits including Cemalim, Fesuphanallah, and Çöpçüler.
In 1967, he released a record with Kızları da Alın Askere [‘Admit Girls into the Army Too’] on one side, a song that is widely regarded as the first Turkish rock song. Over the course of his long career, Koray released 14 studio albums, one live concert album, and 11 compilation albums. He passed away in August 2023 aged 82 years old.
Paying homage to this incredible artist is London-based Turkish artist Djanan Turan and The Flying Karpet Collective, who have been at the forefront of the North London music scene for many years.
Turan boasts a diverse repertoire, and can often be found fusing earthy Turkish folk, with electronica and edgy global beats. The Flying Karpet Collective features a band of outstanding musicians including drummer Tansay Omar, keys player Jomy Jomert, Bubu on percussion, Berdin Pamukcu on guitar, and Taha Turan on bass.
Joining them on the night will be DJ Burak Çetindağ, who will be spinning an eclectic mix of 60s and 70s, to early 80s Anatolian psychedelic rock, funk and jazz gems on the warm sounds of rare 7-inch vinyl.
