If you’re after a hybrid mix of psychedelic rock, funk, and electronic, wrapped in a heavy Anatolian twang, look no further than Lalalar.
This trio of multi-media musicians-cum-producers aim to bury the borders between the Middle East and the rest of the world without “harming any species” as they create fresh psychedelic vibes plucked from the depths of the original multi-cultural city of Istanbul.
Lalalar describe their sound as, “a future-nostalgia through some retro-cinematic bass lines, electro-dirty beats, rebroken vocals, self-flirting guitars”. The songs are laced with samples of classics from Anatolia’s incredible musical archive.
The band’s first pressed memories came earlier this month, courtesy of Bongo Joe Records. Check out Mecnun’dan Beter Haldeyim and İsyanlar, both available on limited edition 7” vinyls.
So if you’ve missed the chance to get your hands of tickets for Gaye Su Aksoy’s Jazz Café gig (she a huge fan of the band), get to see the next big thing from Istanbul this Thursday, 28 November, when Lalalar do a solo date at Peckham Audio. After that, they jet off for gigs in Oslo and Copenhagen.
