If you’ve seen the Netflix series The Club, set in a 1950s music club in Istanbul’s vibrant Beyoğlu district, you will already have a good idea about the city’s historically cosmopolitan and multi-ethnic character.
Later this month Baha Yetkin, a leading oud player from Turkey, and his all-star group of musicians from Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, will take to the stage at East London’s Rich Mix seeking to emulate the vibe of this era.
Baha Yetkin and his ensemble will be performing everything from Ottoman compositions through to songs by pop diva Sezen Aksu, alongside original music written by Yetkin.
The group’s colourful set will also include pieces with Jewish, Armenian and Greek roots, reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of this great metropolis.
The evening will have surprise guest stars, as well as poetry, visuals and an Istanbul underground soundtrack before and after the live music. So come and immerse yourself in the soundworld of Istanbul – the City of Stars!
