Two men have each been sentenced to 25 years in prison over the killing of London resident Hüseyin Mavideniz outside a nightclub in İskele, North Cyprus, three years ago.
The Famagusta Assize Court found Mehmet Yazıcı and Doğu Ömer Alçıner guilty of manslaughter, causing grievous bodily harm and serious assault. The sentences were handed down on 6 July 2026, bringing the long-running trial to an end.
Mavideniz, aged 29 and a married father of two, had travelled from London to North Cyprus for a holiday when the fatal incident occurred outside the Breeze entertainment venue in İskele during the early hours of 10 August 2023.
Evidence presented during the initial court proceedings stated that Mavideniz was punched in the face, causing him to fall and strike his head on the concrete ground. He was then attacked again while lying on the ground. A post-mortem examination concluded that he died from a fatal brain haemorrhage caused by the blows he suffered.
His death caused widespread shock, anger and profound sadness in North Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot community in Britain.
Mavideniz’s uncle, İrfan Davulcular, and his wider London-based family maintained a determined campaign for justice throughout the case. Relatives and friends organised a “Justice for Hüseyin Mavideniz” march in London in September 2023, while Mr Davulcular and other family members regularly travelled to North Cyprus to attend court hearings and closely follow the proceedings.
Two other defendants, Hasan Yazıcı and Cüneyt Gökkaya, had previously each received one-year prison sentences after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm and serious assault against Baran Mavideniz and Hüda Yalınayak during the same disturbance.
Mehmet Yazıcı and Doğu Ömer Alçıner were subsequently convicted of all the charges brought against them and were each ordered to serve 25 years in prison.
The ruling concludes a legal process that lasted almost three years.
