The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has congratulated Andy Burham for becoming the new British Prime Minister (PM).

In the letter to PM Burnham, the Azerbaijani leader emphasised “the comprehensive development of Azerbaijan-United Kingdom relations based on rich and good traditions”, including “economic and trade cooperation”.

President Aliyev highlighted how well companies representing the UK are “operating effectively across both the oil and non-oil sectors of the country's economy”, specifically mentioning the “long-standing and successful collaboration”  with oil and gas giant bp.

The Azerbaijani leader also stated the important role the UK was playing in the “reconstruction and development efforts” of the Nagorno-Karabakh region of the country, which was liberated from Armenian occupation in 2023.

President Aliyev stated that he was “confident” that the two leaders “will successfully continue our joint efforts to further strengthen the friendly relations and our partnership between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom in line with the interests of our peoples.”

He ended by again congratulating the new UK Prime Minister and wishing him “success in your future responsible activities.”
