One of the most exciting new bands to emerge from Turkiye is Lalalar. Hailing from Istanbul, the three-piece outfit serve up a unique blend of punk rock, psychedelic funk and electronica bound together with Anatolian beats.
Band members Barlas Tan Özemek, Kaan Düzarat and Ali Güçlü Şimşek describe their sound as “a future-nostalgia through some retro-cinematic bass lines, electro-dirty beats, rebroken vocals, self-flirting guitars”.
Their songs regularly feature samples borrowed from Anatolia’s incredible musical archive, giving Lalalar’s genre-busting high energy music an edge that European audiences have fallen for as much as those from Turkiye.
Last year, the trio released their highly acclaimed debut album Bi Cinnete Bakar [‘Look At Da Madness’], 15 tracks of absurd musical magic, prompting T-VINE culture writer Gizem Öztürk to list it as one of the top 5 essential listens of summer 2022.
The band have been making waves with their live performances too. They’ve already rocked Dutch music festival Le Guess Who and Les Rencontres Trans Musicales in France, and will be back out on the European circuit this year too.
They return to Britain too in September. After making their UK debut at the intimate Peckham Audio in November 2019, Lalalar will go on a mini UK tour with gigs in Manchester (5 Sept. Band on the Wall) and Norwich (7 Sept. Norwich Arts Centre), before arriving in Camden, London, to play the Jazz Café on Saturday 9 September.
Get your tickets fast – these gigs will definitely sell out!
