Artist Nagihan Seymour returns to The Lightbox with a new solo exhibition ‘The Four Elements’, which runs for a fortnight from Monday, 25 May.
Through artworks that include paintings and ceramics, Seymour explores the classical elements of Earth, Water, Air and Fire, which were believed by the ancient Greeks to explain the nature and complexities of all matter.
Incorporating natural pigments and precious metals into her artworks, Seymour uses each wall space of the gallery to symbolise one of the elements.
She draws inspiration from nature, seeking to stylise the infinite and complex natural world and apply this in her stunning geometric patterns and symmetrical designs using naturalistic floral ornamentation with simple expression.
Gold is the main material used in the paintings, complimented with acrylic, gouache and watercolour paints on handmade and treated papers. Her paintings are free, hand-drawn and painted incorporating 11 to 24 carat gold.
Seymour is renowned for Tezhip, the art of Turkish or Ottoman illumination and sacred non-figurative decorative geometry.
Originally a materials engineer, she has practiced Tezhip since her university years, studying this traditional artform in her hometown of Istanbul.
After her first solo exhibition at The Lightbox in 2017, she became a full-time artist painting and creating ceramics from her studio in Horsell, Woking.
