This Friday, all roads lead to Tottenham where the local Labour Party will be hosting their annual Gala Dinner, with London Labour Mayoral Candidate Sadiq Khan as their special guest. Held in the sumptuous Regency Banqueting Suite – the epicentre of Turkish, Greek, and Cypriot celebrations – the dinner and dance also doubles up as a fundraiser for the forthcoming London Mayoral and GLA elections.
Over 250 people are expected to attend the event, which includes a 3-course meal and quality entertainment. The organisers have taken their cue from the hugely multi-cultural mix of North London, booking some of the most exciting World Music stars in the capital.
Kourelou, whose name means ‘patchwork’, headline. Drawing on their Greek, Ottoman and South Balkans roots, their vibrant musical beats served with a contemporary twist is guaranteed to get even the politicos shimmy-shaking! Formed by Pavlos Mélas back in 2013, the band’s core members play violin, bouzouki, baglama, tzoura davul, defi, piano and guitar, and have taken to the stage at leading venues such as the Southbank Centre and Barbican, as well as at prestigious festivals across Britain and Europe. Gala guests will be among the first to hear songs from Kourelou’s eagerly awaited debut album Patchwork.
Making a special guest appearance on Friday night will be Olcay Bayır, a singer originally from southeast Turkey now based in London. Olcay has taken the World Music scene by storm since releasing her debut album Neva/Harmony in 2014, which journeys through Anatolia and the Mediterranean coast covering traditional songs from its diverse people, including Albanian, Armenian, and Kurdish.
For those who love Latin music, there’s the Chilean Folk Band. Oh and there will be a fair few famous Labour faces in the house too…
