After two successful dates, Turkish classical music has clearly found a new home in Honor Oak, South East London. Top Turkish singer Sezar Uğur Soy presents another fabulous Fasıl Night at Hattush Restaurant this Friday with renowned musical duo Hüseyin Cemgünal (keyboards) and Ercüment İbrahim (violin). The Turkish eatery has become a firm favourite since opening last May, not just among locals but many others who travel from afar to enjoy Hattush’s warm ambience, authentic food and weekend entertainment. Restaurant owner Sezar Uğur Soy was a big pop star in his native Turkey before making the move to London, where he has settled with his wife and young son. Never far from his musical roots and boasting a broad repertoire, Sezar can be found singing to his customers during most weekends, his eclectic Turkish set proving to be the perfect live accompaniment to the tasty dishes being served from Hattush’s kitchen. Fasıl music has its origins in the Ottoman Royal Court. Over the centuries, the music has evolved and fasıl is now synonymous with meyhane (taverna) culture: live musicians entertain diners who want to eat, drink and be merry all night long. A small group of master musicians play a mix of traditional Ottoman classical music, popular Turkish songs from the 1950s and 60s, and Arabesque (Middle Eastern influenced music) to create a crowd-pleasing atmosphere that is guaranteed to get Turkish diners singing along and (after a fair few rakıs) everyone up on their feet for a shimmy-shake. To assist Hattush diners get into that Turkish groove on Friday will be bellydancer Annette. The restaurant’s previous two Fasıl Nights were fully booked, so prior reservation is highly recommended.
