If you missed this exhibition last year, when it was on at the South Bank, make sure you visit this time round. The occasion is the Prophet Muhammed’s 1446th birthday, celebrated through the incredible works of prominent Turkish calligraphers past and present.
It’s perfect viewing for those interested in calligraphy, Islamic art, design and typography. The works, both classic and contemporary, use a diverse range of styles, colours and geometric patterns as a backdrop to Arabic script in the Hilye-i Şerîf tradition.
Hilye-i Şerîf is an Islamic art form dedicated to celebrating the Prophet Muhammed’s physical and moral beauty. The texts used are drawn from verses of the Kuran, hadiths, and key quotes, written in various calligraphy styles such as kufic, muhaqqaq, thuluth, diwani, naskh and ta’liq.
The works featured at ‘Love for the Prophet’ are not only superb examples of calligraphy, but also stunning works of art and illumination. Catch it at the Yunus Emre Institute before the exhibition ends on the first Friday in May.
