The Yunus Emre Institute in London is staging a special performance of Karagöz & Hacivat shadow play as part of the annual celebration of National Sovereignty and Children’s Day in Turkey on 23 April.
This famous play, which is aimed at kids aged 4 and older, but suitable for all the family, will be performed in Turkish at the Institute’s Central London venue at lunchtime on Saturday, 23 April 2022. A Karagöz & Hacivat colouring book will be gifted to children after the play.
Saturday’s performance will be by British Turkish actress Ada Burke, who hails from Turkey. Burke has been performing Karagöz & Hacivat in Turkish and English in various venues across the UK on behalf of Yunus Emre Institute London.
The Karagöz & Hacivat shadow play is not only great entertainment, but also a fantastic showcase of traditional Turkish culture.
Due to its cultural value, the Yunus Emre Institute London has developed an educational project with puppeteers to tour and perform the play in primary schools across London. The project is in keeping with the Institute’s mission to promote an understanding and appreciation of Turkish culture, whilst establishing a bridge between students coming from different cultural backgrounds.
