If you love Turkish food and are in London, get yourselves to Hackney this week, so you can sample all your favourite flavours in one place.
On Thursday, 13 June, a five-day food festival opens by Suleymaniye Mosque in Haggerston, East London. Semi-covered street stalls will be selling a wide range of Turkish food, including doner kebabs, shish kebabs, lahmacun (Turkish pizza), fried chicken, and traditional desserts such as kunufe and Maraş ice cream, washed down with Turkish coffee and tea. All food is halal certified.
A similar event in April was very popular with locals. All food are reasonably priced: doner kebabs sell for between £5/6, lahmacun £2, slices of cakes and other desserts between £1 and £2, fried chicken with chips £5. For drinks, Turkish coffee is just £1, with Turkish tea served for free with food.
According to organisers, car and cycle parking is available within the area. The nearest train station is Haggerston (East London Line), which is just a few minutes’ walk away. The 67, 243 and 149 buses all run along the main Kingsland Road between Dalston and Shoreditch, and stop close by.
